Important things to know about recalled airbags

Products liability law is in place to protect consumers from defective and dangerous products such as defective auto parts. The tally for the Takata airbag recall includes 42 million vehicles and 69 million airbag inflators that will need to be replaced. The airbags can explode and spew shrapnel, harming victims. The defective airbags have caused approximately 11 deaths in the United States, along with 180 injuries in the U.S. and deaths internationally as well.

The defect relates to the degradation of a chemical and the manufacturer's failure to use a chemical drying agent. It is possible for car owners to go online to determine if they have one of the defective airbags according to the VIN number for their car. A variety of auto makers are impacted by the recall and humidity and high temperatures creates extra risk of an airbag rupture, however, vehicles younger than 6 years old are not at risk because the pressure from the degrading chemical has to build up over time.

It is expected to take a number of years for all of the airbags to be replaced and there have been challenges associated with that process, though some automakers have offered loaner vehicles to car owners impacted. Auto defects are a serious concern for consumers and have the ability to cause significant harm to victims and their families. When victims have been harmed by a defective auto part, they have resources, rights and remedies available to help protect them.

Products liability law provides important protections for victims of defective or dangerous products, including defective cars, to recover compensation for the physical, financial and emotional harm suffered. Consequently, it is important for victims of an auto defect to be familiar with their options when harmed.
