Product recall issued for dangerous Ikea dresser

After tragic and deadly recent events, a furniture company has issued a product recall that could have a widespread impact, both in Virginia and nationwide. Ikea has recalled 29 million dressers and chests due to the potential for consumer death. The dressers have been reported to tip over easily, which has resulted in serious injury and even death for children.

Tragically, at least six children have died following use of these dangerous products, and 36 have been injured. The deaths, which go as far back as 1989, and are as recent as February, 2014, have all been of children under the age of four.

The recalled "Malm" dresser series is no longer being sold by Ikea. Ikea's USA president has gone so far as to ask those who already own the dresser to take it out of their rooms. However, Ikea will provide a free repair kit, if owners wish to continue to use the dresser, allowing them to anchor it to the wall. So far, the furniture giant has already provided 300,000 kits. Those who own the dresser but do not want to continue to use it may qualify to receive a refund.

Frighteningly, the potential for injury and death from unstable dressers is high for children. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, every 24 minutes, a child has to receive treatment in an emergency room due to injuries suffered from a falling television or other piece of furniture, and, tragically, every two weeks, a child dies from such an incident.

This recall follows the unthinkable deaths of young children. If you or a loved one has been injured by a dangerous product such as this Ikea dresser, you may wish to consult with an attorney regarding your legal options, as compensation may be available for damages suffered.
