Study reveals significant harm caused by truck accidents

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has released a report that details the significant impact that truck accidents have on drivers and passengers on the nation's highways. The report contains a tremendous amount of data and reveals some trends that might interest Virginians as they travel along the state's highways.

Between 2013 and 2014, there was a five percent decrease in the number of large trucks involved in fatal truck accidents, declining from 3,921 to 3,744. In contrast, over the same period, the number of large trucks involved in crashes that led to injury increased by a substantial 21 percent, up from 73,000 to 88,000.

The data reflects that truck accidents pose the risk for serious injuries, as well as death. In 2014, 20 percent of crashes involving large trucks resulted in a minimum of one nonfatal injury. One percent of the truck accidents reported to police that year resulted in at least one fatality. In the truck accidents that led to fatalities, there was an average of 1.14 fatalities, though the majority of these crashes involved only one fatality. Most of the fatal truck crashes, 61 percent, occurred on rural roads, and an overwhelming majority, 84 percent, occurred during the traditional workweek of Monday through Friday.

Virginians who have been involved with a collision with a truck or who have lost a loved one in a truck accident may wish to seek the advice of legal counsel regarding their rights. All too often, a truck accident may be due to the negligence of a truck driver or truck company, and an attorney can discuss potential avenues for victims to obtain compensation following an accident.
