Tragic rear-end collision results in death of man

Because rear-end collisions are one of the most common types of car crashes, many people think they are not as serious as other types of collisions, such as a head-on collision. However, a rear-end collision can result in serious injury or even death in many cases, depending on the sequence of events after the initial crash. Many car accidents have a domino-effect, which can end up resulting in a serious accident that involves several vehicles.

A rear-end collision in Virginia ultimately ended up causing the death of one man and serious injuries to two children when all three occupants were ejected from the vehicle after the initial collision. The man who was killed in the car accident had stopped his vehicle to make a left-hand turn when he was hit from behind by a Ford van. That impact spun the car into the northbound lane, ejecting the man and two children who were with him in the vehicle. A Ford Fusion then collided with the man's vehicle, despite efforts to avoid the crash. A fourth vehicle hit the man lying in the roadway after attempting to avoid crashing into the wreckage of the first vehicle and the Ford Fusion. The driver who initially rear-ended the man may be charged in the crash.

In an accident like the one described here, there appears to be some pretty clear liability for what ended up being a horrific and tragic accident. The report of the accident indicated that the man who was killed was lawfully stopped in the roadway, waiting for an opportunity to make his left-hand turn. It is unclear why the driver behind him failed to stop, but that driver's negligence or reckless resulted in the death of an individual and serious injuries to two child passengers.

In cases where an accident was attributable to someone else's driving mistake, negligence or recklessness, a personal injury or wrongful death lawsuit can help victims and their families obtain the financial resources they need to cover the costs resulting from the crash. These lawsuits may also provide a type of closure for victims and their families as they hold the responsible party legally liable for his or her actions. Although success in these kinds of lawsuit relies on establishing liability, citations or charges resulting from the crash can be strong evidence for the plaintiff.
